28 West Sports Bar, located in the heart of Downtown Alhambra at 28 W. Main St., is well known for their eats, drinks, music, and sporting events. The Los Angeles Times has considered them the “Dodgers Bar of San Gabriel Valley” for their popular crowd of Dodger fans coming in to watch the baseball games. The owners’ passion for sports and the lack of sports bars in the city led to the opening of 28 West. “We wanted to open a place where sports fans and families can come and watch their favorite game and team,” said co-owner Alice Cortinez.
With the COVID pandemic, this casual sports bar has been faced with a challenge when they were mandated by the state to close in March. They were soon able to reopen in June for a week, yet then had to remain closed until September. Now open for patio dining, 28 West recreates their amazing indoor sports bar to outdoor hotspot with 5 TVs and a large screen projector for customers to enjoy viewing their favorite sporting events again.
“We are fortunate to have our city and community along with our neighbors to support us in opening outdoor patio dining,” Alice said. “Even though it is difficult to manage and handle bringing the furniture and TVs in and out daily, we are grateful to be back in business. We want our customers to have the same experience as before.”
28 West provides a safe and clean environment by requiring masks upon entering the premises, checking temperatures, providing hand sanitizer stations, and requiring that all sales of alcoholic beverages must be accompanied by food. Keeping their staff and customers safe is an important factor even if they have to financially sacrifice more expense to provide extra PPE for staff and disposable dining wares. “We are trying to stay safe and practice social distancing,” said Fermin Gutierrez, assistant manager.” Not being inside is great because I like the outdoor environment better.”
Customers’ favorite foods and drinks at 28 West can still be enjoyed. Most popular is the empanadas, which are usually sold out in an hour. They are freshly homemade with traditional Mexican fillings of guisada meat or chicken base served with cilantro sauce. Hand tossed artisan pizzas are made from their own handmade dough with fresh ingredients.
Sliders are served with high quality meat and homemade sauce. Great to share are the nachos, made with their own cheese sauce, flat meat carne asada, and fresh toppings and topped with guacamole. The outdoor bar serves 28 beer handles, a variety of craft, domestic, and import beers, signature cocktails, and martinis.
28 West can accommodate and accept reservations for a maximum of six per party. They are open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Follow them @28westbar on Instagram and @28west on Facebook. Visit their website at https://28-west-sports-bar.business.site for game schedules and business hours.
