In a season that had the whole city and all ages cheering, Alhambra High’s Varsity Football Team had its best season record since 1946, the year it last won a title.
Led by Coach Eric Bergstrom, the AHS varsity squad ended the regular season as undefeated league champs to make it to the CIF semifinals where they lost to Ramona 28-24.
“It’s not just our record that made the season unforgettable,” said senior Kody Chuang. “It was also as a team we established an unbreakable bond that showed in our success.” According to fans, that consistency and commitment from the players and coaches made this historic season possible — they never gave up on themselves or on each other.
“Making the semifinals was an honor and somewhat of a surprise,” said senior Matthew Donko. “Once we got there, I knew we belonged there.”
“Our players understood what they had to do week to week to be successful as a team and were willing to make sacrifices to do it,” said Coach Bergstrom. “They were always supportive of each other and took pride in each other’s success.”
Coach Bergstrom, in the running for L.A. Rams High School Coach of the Year (winner was announced after press time Dec. 30), was honored by the AUSD Board of Education Dec. 10. He was accompanied by his assistant coaches and players when he received official commendations.
