A message from the superintendent: A warm welcome back to school and a reminder: connection + civility = empathy = safety

Candace Winn’s first grade class at Brightwood School is excited to be back at school.

We are beginning a fresh new school year filled with promise and discovery. Along with a warm welcome back, my special wish for each of you is to fully embrace learning, growth, hope, and connection. Never have these four mindsets been needed more.

All of us at Alhambra Unified are fortunate to be part of one of the most richly diverse communities in the nation. Daily at AUSD, we are lucky enough to experience and savor the value of the perspectives of our multicultural, multilingual fellow students, parent, and colleagues. We learn more expansively and we build better, more interesting teams, solutions, and plans when we take advantage of more varied viewpoints.

This appreciation of those who are different from us is essential to a civil society and to success in learning and in life. In light of recent deadly violence, we must each actively seek to do more to create a culture of belonging in our schools, our neighborhoods, and our communities. Let each of us become a model for harmony, empathy, and compassion.

Here at AUSD, we have a twin focus on academic excellence and relationship-building — and each of you is the key to both. With those anchors, we have a beautiful year ahead.

With warmest appreciation,

Denise Jaramillo
