The Alhambra Chamber of Commerce presented its annual golf tournament “Play Fore the Kids Oct. 18. Each year, the proceeds from the tournament go to the Chamber Scholarship program, which awards more than $10,000 of college scholarship money to high school seniors. The tournament took place at the Alhambra Municipal Golf Course. It was the last one to be overseen by retiring golf course manager Jerry Wisz, who was honored by former Alhambra Mayors Mark Paulson and Steve Placido for his long service to the golf course and to Alhambra.
Play began at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start. Each group of the 80 players teed off simultaneously from different holes so that everyone finished at the same time. At 4 p.m., a buffet dinner was served at Almansor Court to award the winners and distribute prizes from an auction and a raffle. Prizes included a GoPro, tickets to a King’s game, golf clubs, fishing gear, and a big screen TV.
This year’s tournament was co-sponsored by the Alhambra Hospital Medical Center and Evike.com. The auto sponsor was Volkswagen of Alhambra. Al’s Towing sponsored a Golf Tips session from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Goudy Honda sponsored the hole-in-one contest offering a free car to any player who was lucky enough to make the cup in one stroke. Unfortunately no one did.
Other businesses and organizations who entered teams included Evike, Republic Services, SoCalGas, Transtech Engineers Inc., Pepsi, Anheuser-Busch, The Ratkovich Company, American Legion Post 139, Alhambra Women’s Golf Club, and the Almansor Men’s Golf Club. The Chamber staff and the volunteers of the Chamber’s Ambassadors kept the day running smoothly.
Golf Committee members were Chamber Board members Joe Pavon, Dr. David Snyder, Valarie Gomez, Evike Chang, Chamber Office Manager Irma Hernandez, Marketing Director Stan Yonemoto, Rosemarie Valerio, Julian Chan, and Alhambra Golf Course pros Fernando Vasquez and Kevin Williams.
Thanks go to Chamber Ambassador volunteers Nickie Chan, Kay Lee Fukui, Jewelyn Co, Frances Lo, Cindy Ho, Sam Yue, and Eddie Garcia.
The Chamber is grateful for the outstanding support from all those who purchased tee signs. Thanks also to the exceptional service and help from head golf professional Jerry Wisz and the staff of the Alhambra Golf Shop, as well as Gary Miller and the Almansor Court staff who helped with the planning and management of the day’s activities.
