Alhambra’s Job Center now open

The Job Center is located at 2550 W. Main St., Alhambra 91801.

The Los Angeles County Workforce Development has a job center office here in Alhambra. It is the West San Gabriel Valley Worksource Center, an important place for young people ages 14 to 24 in the area to get valuable training and work experience before heading into their own careers.

Youngsters who enroll in the center’s program receive 100 hours of work experience and 20 hours of training to prepare them for job readiness. It can be an important leg up on job applications and hiring. The Job Center program offers internships in such places as county offices and parks and the Boys and Girls Clubs.

The Job Center has a resource center equipped with computers that improve skills in typing, research, and resume writing. In addition, the center offers online resources such as virtual sites that include CalJOBS and California Career Zone. The center also has close ties with local colleges like East Los Angeles College, which has job skill training classes on campus and online.

The Job Center targets at-risk youth: foster children, Cal Works kids, young people on probation, and immigrants, for its programs. For many, the Job Center is a place to turn their lives around and get serious about their lives. Young people often need a second chance, and the Job Center is a good place to turn lives around.

There is also a program for adults. Here the focus is on vocational training and job searches. Again the local colleges, with their focus on job skills, play an important role as partners in training and finding jobs for their clients.

Overseeing the Alhambra branch of the Job Center is Ms. Guadalupe Gallegos. She has 15 years of experience in vocational training and is a perfect fit for the needs of young people seeking their first jobs. It has been a rough year for her and the center with the complications of the pandemic. In 2019, she said that 80 people a month would come to the center for help. That number dropped to 40 a month during the worst of the pandemic, but is beginning to grow again as everyone eases their way out of the health crisis.

Call the Job Center at 323-832-1274 for more information or to make an appointment at their location in the Fremont Center at 2550 W. Main St., Alhambra 91801.
