The Green Menu Organization, 560 W. Main St., Suite D, Alhambra, is a non-profit foundation that inspires and promotes education about a healthy lifestyle and a green environment through a vegetarian diet. The revolution of healthy eating of green or plant based food such as vegetables and fruits is becoming more popular as awareness of its benefits are recognized. The Green Menu Organization was founded in 2011 in Arcadia as Great Light Tao, then relocated to Alhambra in 2013 as Green Menu Organization.

“We decided to come to Alhambra because the city is the perfect location to serve Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley,” said Alice Chang, president of Green Menu Organization. “Our goals and mission are to promote vegetarianism and plant based dishes. We work locally and internationally with vegetarian and vegan restaurants to use plant based food. We would like more restaurants to be more involved to help us with educating and promoting.” The Green Menu Organization is solely based on tax deductible donations, and the monetary contributions are spent to make vegetarian dining accessible for the general public.

The Green Menu facility is not a restaurant that serves and sells food but a place where the organization hosts events to promote and invite the community to learn about a green diet.

“I started as a volunteer,” said event coordinator and organizer Elva Yang. “I like being a part of the Green Menu Organization because this is my passion. We started and organized the first vegan night market in the Los Angeles area in 2018, the first global international vegetarian event. It is held indoors in the Green Menu Organization in Alhambra with many food vendors who serve vegetarian food and drinks. We have events, such as the afternoon Tea Time with an inspired Alice in Wonderland theme where we dress up in costumes and decorate the place for the experience.”

Different varieties of dishes are served based on the theme of the event, such as at the Vegan Night Market, Taiwanese street food like vegetarian dimsums, was served, and at the Tea Time event, scones, sandwiches, and other plant based dishes were served. Yearly, the night market event generates about 400 to 500 attendees.

Green Menu Organization is a membership program based with volunteers who have already been established and are invited to be in the organization. “Our volunteers are the ones who cook, serve, and provide high quality, fresh, homemade food and drinks made only with natural ingredients,” said Jonathan Chao, volunteer with the organization for seven years. “Before serving, we taste and try the food to better serve the best quality of food. Some volunteers are retired chefs who enjoy cooking and serving green delicious creative dishes.” Dishes may look and taste like meat, but they are plant based and created to imitate meat.

The events are open to the public, and they can attend events with no fees or membership required. Space is also available for special private events such as birthdays, anniversary, weddings, and other special occasions. Bookings are available with the Green Menu Organization with packages and special themes to choose from, such as the Tea Time theme private parties, and may include soup, main entree, and dessert. Their Meatless Monday Tea Time is open to the public and starts at 3 p.m.

The Green Menu Organization program is active and gives back to the community by hosting charities and fundraisers, providing vegetarian snack garden tours and lectures. They provide meal programs and lunch boxes to the city law enforcers, first responders, and community colleges such as East Los Angeles College. They are also seeking restaurants who can provide the food or donate at least $10 to help with the students. The Green Menu Organization works in collaboration with local libraries to teach cooking classes and prepare vegetarian or plant based dishes.

The Green Menu Organization accepts monetary and other donations such as food utensils, lunch boxes, and containers, and any useful materials and supplies for food distribution are greatly appreciated. To make donations, contact them at 626-872-001, or e-mail info@greenmenu.org.For more information on Green Menu Organization, visit their website at https://www.greenmenu.org/, or follow their social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube where events are posted and announced.
