Despite on and off rain showers throughout Friday, Dec. 6, the skies cleared up just in time for the Tree Lighting Ceremony in Downtown Alhambra, kicking off another holiday season in style.
Onlookers of all ages cheered on Santa as he rode in at Edwards Renaissance Plaza with the Alhambra Fire Department instead of with his reindeer. Festivities commenced at 6 p.m. with a warm welcome from new Mayor of Alhambra Ross Maza. Councilmembers Adele Andrade-Stadler, Katherine Lee, Jeff Maloney, and David Mejia were also present, as well as Sandra Armenta Lopez, representing State Sen. Susan Rubio.
The Christmas tree was lit shortly after the mayor’s greetings. Patrons enjoyed the rest of the night’s planned program, which included free family photo sessions with Santa, balloon artists, hot coffee, shopping provided by pop-up vendors, and holiday-themed entertainment from PopRock Academy and the Daurden Performing Arts Conservatory, who performed The Nutcracker.
Attendees also enjoyed the local eateries and stores nearby. Per annual tradition, there were toys and gift certificates donated at the designated deposit boxes for the Spark of Love Toy Drive, sponsored by the Alhambra Fire Department.
