The philosophy of the College Counseling program at Ramona is to guide students through a personal four-year journey of exploration, self-discovery, hard work, and growth as they prepare for college. Two full-time counselors empower their young women to prepare for and select the college that best fits their talents, interests, and career plans while making sure students have the information and support they need for success.
This year, a group of motivated 10th, 11th, and 12th graders took a trip arranged through IST Campus Tours and their Guidance Counselors Alberto Chavarria and Kristin Tappan as opportunity to visit and learn more about the programs offered at various East Coast colleges. “It gives the girls an eye-opening experience from the moment they set foot on each campus,” Mr. Chavarria said. “It gives a realistic insight into the college environment and how it relates to the personality of each student.” When meeting with students, he explains that “students in all grades can attend these amazing trips, and it’s never too early to attend a college tour. This is their chance to be inspired and get motivated.”
The recent five-day tour took students to 11 different East Coast schools, including Ivy League schools Brown University, Yale University, and Columbia University, and included travel to local sight-seeing and tourist destinations near the colleges, accommodations, food, a walk through Times Square in New York, and even a musical performance on Broadway. Students also enjoyed visiting with Ramona alumna Angela Reyes-Gomez ‘18, who gave advice and answered many questions about her experience on the East Coast as she is currently studying at Lasell College in Massachusetts. As the trip came to an end, all in attendance came home with a wealth of knowledge they will carry with them as they continue the college search and application process.
