SGV New Gen Rotary Club builds house in Mexico

SGV New Gen Rotary joined several Rotary Clubs in a caravan headed to Mexico to build a house in one day.

On May 18, a dozen members of the San Gabriel Valley New Generation Rotary Club (SGV New Gen Rotary) joined several Rotary Clubs from Southern California in a caravan headed across the border into Mexico to build a house in one day. Corazón, a non-profit organization that creates sustainable communities in Baja California, Mexico, organizes these events called a SuperBuild and recruits volunteers to donate both time and funds in creating social support through housing for families. The house constructed by SGV New Gen Rotary is one of several hundred homes that Corazón has sponsored over the past 40 years.

SGV New Gen Rotary, formed in Alhambra in 2012, has built several homes in Tecate, Mexico, with Corazón over the last seven years. Volunteers arrived at the build site with nothing more than a hammer in hand and a concrete foundation in front of them, with piles of lumber and buckets of nails off to the side. At mid-day, the walls had been constructed and assembled and roof rafters were being set in place. By dusk, a house was built for the Mendez-Silva family, who themselves had participated in building a dozen homes for other families in the Corazón community and were now receiving the keys to a home where they can raise their family.

This international service project is just one example of the many service projects conducted by the SGV New Gen Rotary Club. The club’s activities are focused in and around the San Gabriel Valley, where the members live and work. Weekly meetings are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Thai Purple restaurant, 27 N. Garfield, Alhambra. Guests are welcome!

The SGV New Gen Rotary Club is a volunteer organization in which members come together to give back to their community and make great friends. The club has donated funds or contributed labor to assist the AUSD LIFT Program Garden, Alhambra Fire Department Spark of Love Toy Drive, AUSD Teacher Grants, Alhambra First Responder’s Fund, Alhambra Police Foundation, and the Alhambra Educational Foundation, who named the club the Outstanding Community Service Organization in 2018.
