The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation, in collaboration with New Light Art Gallery, hosted an evening reception May 15 for more than 200 friends and supporters at Alhambra City Hall recognizing the participating artists in its art exhibition, Frida Legacy, an Inclusive Art Exhibition.
The exhibition features original works of art by 20 local and international artists, including artists with disabilities, who brought their unique art pieces depicting Frida Kahlo's legendary life, art, and legacy. Councilmember David Mejia welcomed everyone and presented certificates of commendation to each of the artists. The Cal State LA Vocal Arts group, under the direction of Professor Susan Mohini Kane, treated the guests to a medley of classic and Latin songs.
"Frida Legacy is a beautiful example of how art can unite us all,” said Michael Dergar, CEO of Academy of Special Dreams Foundation. “The participating artists are all from different backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities, and abilities, each with their own highly technical style of art, but each inspired by the artistry of such an iconic figure as Frida Kahlo, who 65 years after her death is still relevant for many people because her short life was filled with physical and emotional pain yet she continued to paint.
“We give special thanks to Councilmember David Mejia for his support and, of course, to the City of Alhambra for opening the City Hall Art Gallery to us for this amazing exhibition, to Professor Kane and the Cal State LA Vocal Arts group, to our caterer, Fidel Leos from Los Tacos restaurant, and to all the volunteers, friends, and supporters who helped make the evening so special."
