2018 Alhambra Pumpkin Run, Halloween Fest to benefit Special Olympics

The Alhamabra Pumpkin Run & Halloween Fest will take place Oct. 28.

The Annual Alhambra Pumpkin Run & Halloween Fest, presented by Alhambra Hospital Medical Center and the City of Alhambra, will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. Proceeds from the 5K/1K races will benefit the Special Olympics Southern California, an organization that provides sports programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympic Athletes of Southern California will assist with the 5K start and will host games on the main stage at 9 a.m.

In celebration of its fifth year, organizers promise family-friendly festival attractions and activities that will surpass last year’s event, including the addition of the Hallowscream Trick or Treating & Costume Contest, hosted by the Downtown Alhambra Business Association.

The location for the 5K and 1K races is at the heart of the city on Main Street, starting in front of Rick’s Drive In & Out; the Halloween Festival will be on Second Street, between Main and Commonwealth Avenue.

Highlights for the jam-packed day include:

  • 5K, open to all ages and 1K for kids 12 years and younger.
  • Alhambra Certified Farmers Market.
  • Food vendors
  • Pumpkin Pie baking contest. To compete, register online at alhambrapumpkinrun.com.
  • Beer Garden, sponsored by Ohana Brewing Co.
  • Entertainment, music, dancing, and ‘80s revival band Flash Pants, first place winners of ABC's The Gong Show from 2017.
  • Kids Zone with games, petting zoo, pumpkin patch, bouncy house, rock climbing wall, face painting, and balloon artist.
  • Mosaic Craft Fair.
  • Hallowscream Costume Contest and trick or treating at more than 30 businesses on Main Street
  • Four music stations and one water station on the run route.

Joanna Vargas, the event’s producer and former president of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, is in awe of how much the Pumpkin Run has grown since its inception. “Five years ago, it was smaller and started at Alhambra Park; now it has expanded to a tremendous celebration on Main Street,” She said. “It’s an amazing feeling to help bring the community together and also have the ability to contribute to an altruistic organization such as the Special Olympics.

Liza Rodriguez, president of the Downtown Association, is also excited to partner up with the Pumpkin Run this year and add the Hallowscream Trick or Treating & Costume Contest to the roster. “For Hallowscream, over 30 businesses are participating in our trick or treat walk, and I anticipate over 100 entries for our costume contest,” she said. “There will be something for everyone to enjoy, from the fun energy of the Pumpkin Run, to the freshness of our farmers market, to the yummy eats/drinks from food vendors, and the lively games and entertainment. It's a great way to spend a Sunday.”
