Planet Fitness is one of the nation’s leading providers of physical workouts and fitness training in an environment of mutual support. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is the leading organization for developing youth in an environment of mutual support. Together, these clubs support more than four million young people each year. So it was only natural that the two organizations should team up. This partnership is also a great way for kids to get a head start on living a healthy life.
Planet Fitness franchises, staff, and members have contributed more than $3 million to their nonprofit partners. They have reached more than 750 Boys and Girls Clubs in all 50 states with staff and youth trainings. Planet Fitness has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to youth who promote acceptance and inclusion in their communities.
Locally, Planet Fitness has made significant donations and contributions to the Boys and Girls Clubs in the Los Angeles area. During an 11-day span in October 2017, the enrollment fee to join the gym was $5 down. One hundred percent of those down payments from new members were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena.
Local Planet Fitness Clubs donated more money in the form of a check for $10,000 to Calvin Lyons, the CEO of the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club, on Jan. 20, 2018. Just as important, PF has built mini judgement free zone centers in select Boys and Girls Clubs throughout America.
The Alhambra PF gym is totally on board with this national goal. Planet Fitness Alhambra has opened a mini-Planet Fitness gym at the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena. In the gym’s Judgement Free zone, kids can use the facility without feeling insecure or bullied as they exercise. PF strives to provide boys and girls with evidence-based tools and training to create a culture where bullying is not acceptable.
From Sept. 1 – 30, Planet Fitness clubs in the U.S. and Canada will host their biggest system-wide charitable fundraising campaign yet, during which they will solicit donations from members. One hundred percent of funds raised during the campaign will benefit their nonprofit partner, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (in Canada: Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada), and will support programs aimed at spreading kindness and ending bullying as part of PF's Judgement Free Generation® initiative.
In addition, the Alhambra PF participated in the first annual mental health awareness event at the Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley. Planet Fitness guest speakers were featured in seminars that discussed bullying prevention, myths vs. facts of mental health issues and treatment, substance use and misuse, and stress management. Planet Fitness also facilitated wellness workshops where attendees could learn about yoga, stretching, tai chi, mindfulness, and gardening.
“Planet Fitness is a Boys & Girls Club of America partner on anti-bullying efforts,” said Pilar Diaz, director of Corporate Partnerships at the Boys and Girls Club. “Additionally, on the local level, they have helped us promote health and mental wellness. At our Wellness Resource Fair last June, Planet Fitness staff conducted a demonstration on stretching. They talked about how stretching and exercise decreases stress and improves mental health and well-being.”
When business and social service agencies team up, good things can happen.
