California Mission Inn presents summer event

Crafters offered their handmade goods for sale at California Mission Inn’s “Summer Daze” event.

The California Mission Inn, one of the premier retirement homes in the western San Gabriel Valley, recently hosted a “Summer Daze” event for all to enjoy.

Working on the principal of “feed them and they will come,” the staff barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs and served them up with all the fixin’s. In the shade of the courtyard trees, crafters offered their handmade goods for sale. At one shaded table, Theresa and Lucy presented their hand-sewn aprons, bags, and bibs.

Lorraine, Susan, and Josephine displayed their beautiful offerings of antique jewelry, handmade ceramic necklaces, while Jo presented a table of deliciously crafted soap and bath accessories with aromas that included strawberry, lavender, and chocolate s’mores.

Elsewhere, there was a table set up for mahjong lessons, and the popular beauty salon was open for business. Inside a multi-purpose room, tables were set up for hamburger and hot dog lunches and the enjoyment of a stage show from Mike Chamberlin, the “singing TV guy.” Mr. Chamberlin, a former television news and sportscaster, led a boisterous singalong of hits from the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. Then from the stage, prizes were awarded to raffle winners. Residents and their families enjoyed a busy afternoon of activities, food, and entertainment.

The beautiful Spanish style architecture of the California Mission Inn buildings originally served as a home for retired missionaries and, while remodeled to include modern amenities, it retains its charm and character. Unlike modern facilities, it includes a considerable amount of green space and mature trees.

The California Mission Inn is host to 120 residents. There is an active group enjoying independent retirement living, while a dedicated staff serves the needs of those requiring assisted living and memory care. Nutritious and healthy meals are served in a restaurant setting with the culinary needs of each resident considered.

Best of all, California Mission Inn is a place for fun. All residents and their loved ones are encouraged to participate in and enjoy the activities and programs that are offered.
