Grand Opening for Almansor Park Improvement ProjectApril 14 to also feature basketball tournament

Six brand new regulation sized half courts and one new full size court have replaced the old half-court basketball courts at Almansor Park.

For many years, one of the most popular recreational activities in Alhambra was the half-court basketball courts at Almansor Park. But these courts, always busy, were not regulation size and were crowded together. In April, that all changes. Six brand new regulation sized half courts and one new full size court will replace them.

To celebrate the occasion, the Parks and Recreation Department is preparing two fun events for April that are planned as a combo activity. The first is a Spring Slam Tournament of basketball and the second is the much anticipated Grand Opening of the Almansor Park Improvement Project including the basketball courts.

This dual event is going to take place Saturday, April 14, at Almansor Gym/Park, 800 S. Almansor St. The day will feature the grand opening of the improvement project and a youth basketball tournament sponsored by the Alhambra Police Foundation and Alhambra Police Officers Association.

The tournament will tip off at 9 a.m. with games running every hour, leading up to the championship game at 4 p.m. The teams in the tournament will be co-ed seventh- and eighth- graders from the nine Alhambra elementary schools. Each team will work out with their coach (an Alhambra Recreation Leader) and their Honorary Coach (a police officer).

The teams will use the brand new basketball courts as they practice over the next few weeks, leading up to the inaugural tournament. The police officers will help coach their teams in the tournament, hoping to create a more positive image and experience between police officers and Alhambra’s youngsters.

The grand opening ceremony of the new basketball courts will start at 11 a.m., followed at 11:30 a.m. with a “friendly exhibition game,” a team of police officers vs. a team of fire fighters. Nearby will be the In-N-Out truck, which will provide food to the athletes, coaches, and staff from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It is more than the basketball courts that were improved. There is a brand new public restroom, the creation of six new shaded picnic areas and shaded open space, new LED lighting, the planting of 30 more trees, and an expanded area of green space. The grand opening celebrates the completion of the improvement project. Altogether these long needed improvements cost $2.5 million in Federal HUD funding.
