Performing Arts Center presents ‘The Great American Songbook’ with Murray Middleman

Alhambra Performing Arts Center will present jazz artist Murray Middleman and his All Star trio at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 18.

Alhambra Performing Arts Center (APAC), under the direction of Chef and Artistic Director Bill Yee, will present award-winning jazz artist Murray Middleman and his All Star trio at 7 p.m. on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, at Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church, 1850 W. Hellman Ave. Alhambra.

This special Father's Day concert will highlight the great classic songs by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and others. Mr. Middleman’s talented musicians include Vic Buxton, on keyboard and Tony Jones on drums and vocals.

Mr. Middleman relocated from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in 1982 and quickly established himself as a busy freelance saxophonist and woodwind artist, performing for private events, jazz clubs, and recording dates. He founded his music company Park Avenue West Entertainment with a core of great musicians and was invited to perform for organizations such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, Child Help USA, National Charity League, The L.A. Consular Corp Holiday Ball, and the Children’s Hospital Guild.

In 2000, Mr. Middleman’s soaring clarinet and sax work was highlighted on his jazz CD With Love the Legends, which is a musical tribute to the stars of classic jazz.

In 2011, Mr. Middleman’s soulful sax playing was heard in concert for the “Jazz for Latin Lovers” concerts in Los Angeles. These shows included Cuban pianist Gustavo Rameriz, drummer Emilio Valdez, along with New York bassist Eddi Resto. Mr. Middleman also performed for the 2015-2016 Distinguished Speakers Series at The Saban Theater for Martha Stewart, John Cleese of Monty Python fame, Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and former CIA and U.S. director of Defense Leon Panetta.

Mr. Middleman is busy performing and working as a jazz educator, coach, and private instructor. His third CD project, Brazil-Con Alma (with Soul) will be released later this year.

Mr. Yee is celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Alhambra Performing Arts Center, formerly The Center for the Visual & Performing Arts, which is a community outreach ministry of Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. George R. Martzen.
