38º Ale House and Grill hosts craft beer release party

38º Ale House and Grill (100 W. Main St. Alhambra 91801, 626-282-2038) presented a special craft beer release party in January. Epic Brewing Company created a unique and tasty stout with Alhambra-based LAMill Coffee Boutique. The beer, Son of a Baptist Stout brewed with cocoa nibs and LAMill Velvet Blend, was enjoyed with a complimentary dessert pairing created by 38º chef James Boyle, also featuring LAMill coffee. The dessert, a Bourbon Gelato Affogato LAMill coffee gelee topped with house-made bourbon caramel ice cream and pistachio brittle was the perfect match.

John Martin, LAMill’s director of coffee, explained how this collaboration came to be:

“Epic reached out to us. We were already familiar with their beers, so we were excited to work with them. They’ve been doing a lot of work with coffee with beer as an ingredient. Most brewers just sort of throw it in there without thinking about the nuances present in each kind of coffee.”

Epic’s L.A. rep, Jeff Campbell, said, “a lot of it is, ‘I’m from here.’ I’ve lived here for about 15 to 20 years, and these guys are a local staple; they’ve been around I believe since 1997. The big thing for us is we want people who are passionate about coffee. We are working with 12 different roasters in different markets, so each has their own locale-specific beer.”
