The focus of the FIRST Robotics Competition, March 26 – 29 in Ventura, is on the importance of recycling. Ramona Rampage, the Ramona Convent robotics team, will design and build a robot that is able to pick up large plastic crates used for recycling materials, stack them up, and fill them with recyclable items. The competitive challenge comes in to play when they program their robot to throw pool noodles across the court to the opposing team to generate points. Aulikki Flagan, 12th-year Ramona Rampage moderator, said “We aim to get into the finals this year. Even though we have only been able to do this three times, this feels like the year it could happen.”
Prior to the season, the team raised funds for the club by working the athletic and school snack bar, collected e-waste, sold floral arrangements and drought-tolerant plants, and more. These fundraising efforts, as well as donations from Ramona families and various organizations, have given the team the opportunity to purchase new equipment, participate in community outreach activities, attend workshops and Webinars, and more.
A few of their service learning activities included visits with local girl scout troops and schools to educate them on the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (the STEM program) by using Lego robots and various electronic devices. They also spent a day at Longo Toyota assisting with hospitality at the dealership and folded more than 4,640 plastic car covers to help out the Service Department. They were rewarded for their efforts with a donation from Longo Toyota.
Ramona Rampage is the only all-girls team expected to compete this year at the FIRST Robotics Competition. About 50 students are preparing for competition by contributing more than 20 hours per week on various teams, such as for frame building, electronics, lifting mechanism, programming, marketing and fundraising, and spirit team as they collaborate with their fellow members and Ramona alumnae, alumnae parents, and mentors from the California Institute of Technology.
